Op het podium van het Nederlands Kampioenschap eindigen tussen Maikel van der Vleuten en Harrie Smolders flikt niet iedereen. Maar Kim Emmen wel, en dat met een relatief onervaren paard. We spraken haar gisteravond, een dag na het winnen van haar zilveren medaille met Island V G.

Hoe is het de ‘day after’? “Goed, ik heb gewoon gewerkt en alle andere paarden gereden.” De nuchtere Kim Emmen lijkt niet snel van haar stuk gebracht. “Zondag ben ik nog even blijven hangen in Deurne, lekker nagepraat met wat mensen. En daarna ben ik naar huis gegaan en naar bed.” Geen feestje dus? “Nee, geen feestje”, lacht ze.

Gouden randje

Haar zilveren medaille is er een met een gouden randje, één tijdfout in de eerste manche op zondag weerhield haar van het goud. “Ik ben heel blij met mijn resultaat, ik had dit echt niet verwacht. Het is een super gevoel als je tussen Maikel en Harrie in kunt staan. Dat is toch wel echt leuk, ik sta daar gewoon tussen.” Had je achteraf iets anders gedaan? “Misschien had er meer in gezeten als ik de eerste ronde net iets scherper was geweest. Maar dat is als, als, en dat is achteraf altijd makkelijk gezegd. Ik ben super trots op mijn paard.”

Alleen maar beter

Daarover gesproken, Island V G (v.Zirocco Blue VDL) heeft nog niet zo veel ervaring op dit niveau. “Dat klopt, in februari sprong hij zijn eerste 1.50m-parcours, daarna nog een keer in Den Bosch en in Arezzo sprong hij zijn eerste 1.50m-Grand Prix. Als ik kijk naar hoe Island zich gedurende de week heeft laten zien ben ik daar super blij mee. Naar mate de week vorderde, begon het steeds makkelijker te lopen. Heel veel paarden beginnen goed maar wordt het naar het einde toe steeds moeilijker voor ze. Voor Island gold dat niet, die werd alleen maar beter.” Gaat hij daarom een beter paard worden denk je? “Dat is moeilijk om te zeggen. Hij heeft super gesprongen dit concours en hij heeft er wel echt heel veel in, dat moet er uiteindelijk uitkomen.”

Geen stress voor Kim

In 2019 nam ze voor het eerst deel aan het NK Senioren, ze werd destijds met Teavanta II C Z (v.Treasure Z) 11e. Voor aanvang van de finaledag stond Kim Emmen op een vierde plaats met Island V G en een zevende plaats met Inflame-Go (v.Namelus R). Je zou verwachten dat dat wel wat druk geeft. Maar blijkbaar niet voor Kim. “Ik heb niet zo snel last van stress of nervositeit. Ik kan vrij goed omgaan met druk en blijf heel rustig onder bepaalde omstandigheden. Uit ervaring heb ik gemerkt dat dat het beste is. Dat is niet altijd even makkelijk, en als je voor jezelf rijdt is dat anders dan wanneer je voor een team rijdt.”

Geen tijd om na te denken

Na de eerste manche op zondag stond Kim wederom op de niet-eervolle vierde plaats. Wat gaat er door je heen tussen de eerste en de tweede manche? “Nou ik was best wel druk bezig in de tussentijd. Eerst was ik aan het bedenken om Inflame wel of niet te rijden.” Met Inflame-Go zag ze een balk in het zand vallen en landde hij net met zijn voet in het water in de eerste manche. “Ik ken hem ook nog niet zo goed en ik vond het fijn om te weten hoe hij zich zou herpakken na de eerste manche. Dus ik heb met Erik (Berkhof red.) overlegd hoe en wat, wat we gingen doen. Dus ik ben vooral daarmee bezig geweest en niet met hoe ik ervoor stond. Ik heb mij aan mijn plan gehouden en dat pakte heel goed uit.” Met beide paarden reed Kim een foutloze tweede manche.

Toch een beetje bijgelovig

Na afloop complimenteerde Kim parcoursbouwer Louis Konickx met zijn werk. “Het klinkt stom en misschien is het bijgeloof, maar ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat als Louis bouwt ik altijd goede resultaten heb. Op de een of andere manier is dat nou eenmaal zo.” Wat maakt zijn parcoursen zo fijn? “Louis bouwt altijd goede parcoursen, niet overdreven qua hoogte. De paarden moeten tegenwoordig al zo vaak hoog springen. Hij probeert de parcoursen op een andere manier tricky te maken. Bijvoorbeeld met de tijd, een bochtje wat korter, hij houdt rekening met de omgeving. Dus bij een witte achtergrond gebruikt hij bijvoorbeeld een witte plank. Op die manier probeert hij de paarden én de ruiters te triggeren. Ik vind het knap van Louis dat hij de parcoursen zo probeert te ontwerpen dat hij de paarden niet overvraagt qua vermogen.”

Nog meer toppaarden

En nu? Waar hoop je dit seizoen op, wat is je plan? “Ik hoop niet echt ergens op. Ik heb gewoon mijn plan. Met Eric heb ik afgestemd dat ik ga deelnemen aan enkele Global Champions Tour-wedstrijden. Natuurlijk kan dat plan worden aangepast als daar aanleiding voor is, ik heb geen idee of de bondscoach mij nodig heeft dit seizoen.” Naast Island V G en Inflame-Go heeft Kim nog enkele meer paarden voor het grote werk. “Vergeet niet dat ik Edgar nog altijd heb en Delvaux. Ook Nash v/h Lilleveld heeft inmiddels zijn eerste 1.50m-parcours gesprongen. Ik prijs mij heel gelukkig met deze paarden en ik ben Eric Berkhof heel dankbaar voor de kansen die ik krijg om op dit niveau te kunnen rijden.”

“Net iets bijzonderder”

Tot slot hoe was dit NK voor jou? “Dit was natuurlijk super. Ik ben super trots op mijn paarden. Island heeft geen paal aangeraakt of getoucheerd, maar gewoon vier hele goede, safe rondes gesprongen. Ik woon niet zo ver van Deurne af dus mijn ouders waren er en enkele vrienden. Het is altijd leuk als er mensen zijn die je kent, dat maakt zo’n dag nog net iets mooier, net iets bijzonderder.”

Kim Emmen: The day after winning silver

To slot into the second place between Maikel van der Vleuten and Harrie Smolders at the Dutch Championships is no simple feat. Yet Kim Emmen did it, on a relatively inexperienced horse one might add. We met her last night, a day after her silver medal ride on Island V G.

How do you feel the day after? “Good, I did my work like any other day and rode all the horses.” The down-to-earth Kim Emmen seems not easily fazed. “I stuck around in Deurne on Sunday, had a chat with some people. And then I went home and went to bed.” No party? “No, no party”, she laughs.

Golden lining

Her silver medal has a golden lining, one time penalty in the first leg on Sunday denied her the gold. “I am thrilled with my result; it came so unexpected. It is an amazing feeling to stand amidst Maikel and Harrie. It was so cool to be up there with them.” In retrospect, would you have done anything differently? “Perhaps it could have been more if I had been a bit sharper in the first round. But those what ifs are said with the benefit of hindsight, with which we are all much wiser. I am incredibly proud of my horse.”

Only better

Speaking of which, Island V G (s.Zirocco Blue BDL) does not have a lot of experience at this level yet. “That’s right, in February he jumped his first 1.50m course, followed by one in Den Bosch and he did his first 1.50m Grand Prix in Arezzo. Looking back how Island performed over the week, I am super happy. As the week progressed, it came easier to us. Many horses start off strong but encounter more difficulties towards the end. That was not the case for Island, he only got better.” Does that make you believe he will become a better horse? “That is difficult to say. He jumped fantastic this show and has abundant capacity, which all must come out eventually.”

No stress for Kim

In 2019, she participated in her first Dutch Championships Seniors, placing 11^th aboard Teavanta II C Z (s.Treasure Z). Prior to the final Kim Emmen held a fourth position with Island V G and a seventh place with Inflame-Go (s.Namelus R). You would expect this to generate some pressure. As it turns out, not for Kim. “I am not quickly stressed out or nervous. I handle the pressure quite well and stay calm under specific circumstances. Experience has taught me that is the best. It is not always easy, and it is different when you ride for an individual result compared to riding for a team.”

No time to think

After the first leg on Sunday, Kim again held the non-honourable fourth position. What crosses your mind between the first and second manche? “Well, I was quite busy in the meantime. I first pondered whether to ride Inflame or not”. Aboard Inflame-Go she unfortunately heard one pole drop to the sand and a foot in the water fence in the first round. “I don’t know him very well yet and I wanted to know how he would recover after the first leg. So, I discussed the plan and strategy with Eric (Berkhof, red.). That preoccupied my mind, not the standings. I stuck to the plan, and it all came together.” She cleared the second course with both horses.

A little superstitious

Afterwards, Kim complimented course designer Louis Konickx on his work. “It may sound silly, and it may be superstition, but I can honestly say that my results are always good when Louis designs the course. For some reason that’s the way it is.” What about his courses do you like so much? “Louis always builds good courses, not exaggerated in height. The horses must jump such high fences so often nowadays. He tries to make the courses tricky in other ways. For example, through the time, a tighter turn, and he takes the environment into account. If there is a white background, he uses a white plank. That is his method to trigger the horses and riders. I think it is impressive how Louis tries to design the courses in a manner that they are not overdemanding in terms of scope.”

What’s next? What do you hope to achieve this season, what’s your plan? “I am not really hoping for something. I simply have a plan. Eric and I agreed that I would participate in a few Global Champions Tour competitions. Of course, that plan can be adjusted if there is reason to, I have no clue whether the chef d’equipe needs me this season. “Don’t forget I still have Edgar and Delvaux. Nash v/h Lilleveld has jumped his first 1.50m course as well. I feel fortunate to have these horses and I am grateful to Eric Berkhof for all these opportunities to ride at this level.”

A tad more special

And lastly, how was this Dutch Championship for you? “It was fantastic. I am immensely proud of my horses. Island did not touch a single pole, he jumped four good and safe rounds. I live near Deurne, so my parents and some friends were present to support me. It’s always fun to have people you know well with you, it makes the day even better, a tad more special.”
