Hij werd al drie keer Nederlands Kampioen en weet dus als geen ander hoe de smaak van deze eretitel proeft. Dit jaar lijkt een podiumplek wederom te lonken. Ondanks dat zijn paard nog niet zo veel ervaring heeft op dit niveau. Of juist daarom? We gingen met Leopold van Asten in gesprek na afloop van het tweede onderdeel van het NK Senioren.

“Vorig jaar sprong hij hier de nationale 1.40m-proef en nu springt hij het kampioenschap.” En niet onverdienstelijk. De knappe schimmelruin VDL Groep Iron Z van Leopold van Asten werd gisteren in het tweede onderdeel derde in de dagprijs. In het kampioenschap staan zij op een voorlopige zesde plaats.

Hoge verwachtingen

De tienjarige VDL Groep Iron Z heeft de afgelopen maanden behoorlijke stappen gemaakt. Zo sprong hij op Indoor Friesland vorig jaar oktober zijn eerste internationale 1.50m-proef, op Jumping Indoor Maastricht sprong hij zijn tweede 1.50m-proef en pas op Jumping Amsterdam zijn allereerste 1.60m Grote Prijs. “We hadden in deze proeven nog wat kleine foutjes links en rechts, maar wel op de goede manier. Je hoopt op een gegeven moment dat de puzzelstukjes in elkaar vallen.” En dat lijkt het momenteel te doen. “Het is voor hem vooral kilometers maken op dit niveau, zodat hij meer ervaring krijgt. Ik heb echt hoge verwachtingen van hem voor de toekomst.”

“Echt een degelijke ronde”

“Donderdag had ik een beetje pech, toen kregen we een fout op de uitsprong van de dubbel. Maar we waren aardig vlot.” In het jachtparcours van gisteren werden alle strafpunten bij de tijd opgeteld. Vandaar dat de snelheid van belang was. “Vrijdag was gewoon goed het liep lekker, Iron sprong goed. Voor het gevoel was het echt een degelijke ronde.”

Eigen fokkerij

Al sinds 2000 is Leopold van Asten werkzaam voor Stoeterij Duyselshof, het paradepaard van rasechte paardenliefhebber Wim van der Leegte. Naast de topsport is het opleiden ook een belangrijk onderdeel van de stoeterij. Veelal van de eigen fokproducten. VDL Groep Iron Z is daarvan een goed voorbeeld. “Iron komt uit de eigen fokkerij van Stoeterij Duyselshof. Hij is van een hengst die wij zelf hadden: Charisma. Dat was een Calato x Landjunge. Dat was een heel fijn paard, voorzichtig, met veel erin. Hij is op een gegeven moment naar Canada verkocht. Wij hebben vervolgens een embryo gespoeld uit een Mr.Blue x Heartbreaker-merrie. En Iron is daarvan het resultaat.”

De tijd gegeven

Leopold praat erover of dat het niets is. Maar iedere fokker en ruiter weet dat een 1.60m-paard niet uit de lucht komt vallen. Het succes van VDL Groep Iron Z is dan ook volledig te wijten aan het feit dat hij alle tijd en alle kansen heeft gekregen zowel van zijn eigenaar als van zijn ruiter. “Iron liet altijd heel veel kwaliteit zien. Maar ondanks dat, heeft hij een jaar langer op de africhtingsstal gelopen, omdat hij zo scherp was. We hebben hem bewust wat langer 1.30m laten springen en toen hij 8 jaar was heb ik hem overgenomen.” In die twee jaar dat hij onder Leopold mocht doorgroeien kreeg hij opnieuw alle tijd.

Extreme kwaliteit

“Omdat hij zo’n extreme kwaliteit heeft, heeft alles wat langer geduurd. Je bent dan vooral voorzicht dat je zo’n paard niet overvraagt. Dus ook bij mij heeft hij de tijd gekregen om te wennen aan het niveau. En op een gegeven moment werd hij relaxt en konden we van daaruit verder doorwerken.” En dat resultaat zien we nu. “De afgelopen maanden heeft hij enorme stappen gemaakt.” Van het 1.40m vorig jaar tijdens CH Deurne naar een voorlopig zesde plaats in het kampioenschap nu. “Ja, de tijd nemen heeft in dit geval heel goed uitgepakt.”

Niet echt gebrand op de titel

De laatste keer dat Leopold Nederlands Kampioen werd was in 2019. Met ‘Miss’, zoals hij VDL Groep Miss Untouchable noemt, mocht hij toen de beker in ontvangst nemen. In 2016 was de hoogste trede van het podium eveneens voor Leopold, destijds met VDL Groep Zidane en in 2003 won de toen 27-jarige Leopold zijn eerste NK-titel bij de senioren met VDL Think Twice II. Op de vraag hoe gebrand Leopold is op de titel antwoord hij verrassend. “Nou dat valt eigenlijk wel mee. Maar dat komt vooral eigenlijk omdat ik twee paarden bij mij heb die nog niet heel ervaren zijn op het hogere niveau. Vaak zie je toch op een kampioenschap dat je makkelijker vooraan meedoet als je paarden al wat meer ervaring hebben op 5*-niveau. Maar goed dat neemt niet weg dat ik er alles aan zal doen om vooraan te komen staan en ik hoop dat Iron op zondag die twee rondes net zo makkelijk springt als dat vandaag deed. En dan ben ik hartstikke tevreden.”

Concurrentie tussen de gebroeders Van Asten

In de strijd om de titel is Leopold natuurlijk niet alleen. Maar dat hij ook veel concurrentie van zijn broer Matthijs krijgt, was misschien niet helemaal verwacht. In de dagprijs werd Matthijs vandaag vierde met Hotspot, vlak achter Leopold. In het tussenklassement vinden we hem op plaats acht. “Ja, Matthijs staat kort achter mij, dat is altijd leuk. Het voelt niet echt als strijden tegen elkaar. Je rijdt tegen het parcours, tenminste ik wel. En ik ben blij voor Matthijs als het goed gaat, zo simpel is het. En andersom waarschijnlijk ook, dat zou je hem moeten vragen, maar daar ga ik vanuit”, lacht Leopold.

Dutch championship jumping: Pieces fall into place for Leopold van Asten and VDL Groep Iron Z

He was crowned Dutch Champion three times, so he knows the taste of this coveted title like no other. The podium beckons to him once again this year. Even though his horse is still quite inexperienced at this level. Or is that precisely the reason for it? We had a chat with Leopold van Asten after the second leg of the Dutch Championship for Senior riders.

“Last year, he jumped the national 1.40m course here and now he competes in the championship.” And not without success. The stunning grey gelding VDL Groep Iron Z of Leopold van Asten placed third in the day prize of the second round today. In the championship standings the pair currently sits in sixth place.

High expectations

The ten-year-old VDL Groep Iron Z has made great strides over the past few months. He jumped his first international 1.50m course at Indoor Friesland last October, took on his second 1.50m course at Jumping Indoor Maastricht before competing in his first 1.60m Grand Prix at Jumping Amsterdam. “We had some small errors here and there in those courses, but in a good way. You hope that eventually the pieces fall into place.” And they seem to have. “It’s all about making miles at this level, so he can gain more experience. I have high expectations of his future.”

“A solid round”

“Yesterday was not my lucky day; we had a rail down on the exit jump of the double. However, we were quite fast.” In yesterday’s speed course all jumping faults were added to the overall time. The speed was therefore of utmost importance. “Today was simply good; we had a nice flow, Iron jumped well. It felt like a solid round.”

Own breeding

Since 2000, Leopold van Asten has been employed by Stoeterij Duyselshof, the showpiece of horse enthusiast at heart, Wim van der Leegte. In addition to the top-level sport, schooling the younger horses is another important aspect of the stud farm. Mostly of homebred horses. VDL Groep Z is a prime example. “Iron is a result of the breeding program of Stoeterij Duyselshof. He is sired by a stallion that used to be in our stables: Charisma. A Calato x Landjunge. A nice horse, careful and gifted with a lot of scope. At a certain moment in time, he was sold to Canada. We then flushed an embryo by him out of a Mr. Blue x Heartbreaker mare. Iron is the result.”

Time is of the essence

Leopold shares the story as if it were that straightforward. Yet every breeder and rider knows a 1.60m horse does not emerge out of thin air. The achievements of VDL Groep Iron Z can be credited to all the time and opportunities he was given by both his owner and rider. “Iron has always showcased ample quality. But despite all that, he was in the schooling stable a year longer, because he was so sharp. We deliberately let him jump the 1.30m classes for a longer period and when he was eight years old, I picked up the reins.” In those two years under Leopold, he was again granted all the time he needed.

Extreme quality

“Since he has extreme qualities, everything took a little longer. First and foremost, you are careful to not be overdemanding of such a horse. So, he also received the time to get used to the levels when he was with me. At a certain point he became relaxed, and we could then build upon that foundation.” The fruits are now reaped. “He made enormous progress during the last few months.” From the 1.40m at last year’s CH Deurne to a preliminary sixth position in the championship now. “Yes, taking the time has definitely paid off.”

Not hungry for the title

The last time Leopold became Dutch Champion was in 2019. He was awarded the trophy aboard ‘Miss’, as he fondly calls VDL Groep Miss Untouchable. In 2015, Leopold could also mount the highest step of the podium after his winning performance with VDL Groep Zidane. In 2003 Leopold, then 27 years of age, secured his first Dutch Championship title in the senior division with VDL Think Twice II. When asked how hungry Leopold is for the title, he has a surprising answer. “Well, not so much to be frank. But that’s mainly because I brought two horses that are still inexperienced at the higher level. You often notice that at a championship like this, it is easier to compete for the title when your horses have gained more experience at 5* level. Nevertheless, I will give it my all to come out on top and I hope Iron will jump the two rounds on Sunday as easily as he did today. That would already make me more than satisfied.”

Rivalry between the Van Asten brothers

Leopold is up against more riders in the battle for the title. That one of his fiercest competitors is his brother Matthijs, was perhaps not anticipated. Matthijs placed fourth with Hotspot in today’s day prize, right behind Leopold. In the intermediate standings he pops up in the eighth position. “Yes, Matthijs is right behind me, that’s always fun. It does not feel like we are truly battling each other. You ride your own course, at least I do. And I am happy for Matthijs when he does well, it’s that simple. And I reckon it is the same the other way around, but you would have to ask him” quips Leopold.
